Team Formation & Competitive Balance

Teams are built with every effort to ensure fairness and competitive balance. During registration, parents will be asked to evaluate their child’s experience and skill level. Please provide accurate information to help us create evenly matched teams.

Rating Your Child’s Athletic Ability

During registration, there is a column with a number (1-5) in it. This is a SELF-REPORTED answer to the question, “Please rate the athletic ability of your child (5 being the strongest)”. Please assess and rate your child’s overall athletic ability on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the strongest. This self-reported measure helps us understand your child’s current level of athletic performance and comfort in sports activities.

Here’s a quick guide to help you choose the right number:

1 - Beginner - New to sports, learning basic skills.
2 - Novice - Some experience, still developing basic skills.
3 - Intermediate - Comfortable with sports, developing intermediate skills.
4 - Advanced - Skilled in sports, refining advanced skills.
5 - Expert - Highly skilled, excels in athletic performance.

This rating assists in ensuring a balanced and enjoyable experience for all participants by helping us group children with similar abilities.

Buddy and Coach Request Policy

At the Youth Sports Unlimited SCV League, we understand the importance of playing with friends and preferred coaches, which can greatly enhance the enjoyment and comfort of our young athletes. To accommodate this, we offer the option for players to make buddy and coach requests during the registration process. Here’s how it works:

 Making a Request

  • Buddy Requests: You may request for your child to be placed on the same team as a friend or friends. Please provide the full names of all requested buddies.

  • Coach Requests: If your child has a preference for a specific coach, you can indicate this during registration by providing the coach’s name.

Policy Details

  • No Guarantees: While we strive to honor all requests, please understand that fulfilling a buddy or coach request is not guaranteed. Placement is subject to team composition and availability.

  • Overflows: In cases where there is an overflow of requests for a specific team or coach, we will consult with the coach to finalize the team roster.

  • Reassignments: Players who cannot be accommodated on their requested team due to overflow or other logistical reasons will be reassigned to another team. We aim to keep these reassignments as minimal as possible and will communicate any changes promptly to ensure a smooth transition for your child.

GAME DAY GUIDE

Youth Sports Unlimited SCV – Official NFL FLAG League

Our league is built on fun, competition, player development, and sportsmanship. We are committed to creating a safe and structured environment where athletes can grow both on and off the field.

Below is a clear overview of game structure, rules, division differences, and overall game flow.

Please note: Certain rules, game timing, and number of players on the field may vary slightly from traditional NFL FLAG guidelines. These adjustments allow us to accommodate other leagues and organizations throughout Santa Clarita that operate in a 6-on-6 format.

We encourage all parents and coaches to review the guidelines carefully to help make the season smooth, organized, and enjoyable for everyone.

FLAG FOOTBALL EQUIPMENT

FLAG FOOTBALL EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST

Flag football flags and belt:

  • Every player receives an Official NFL FLAG football belt and flag football flags, either from their coach or league organizer.

***Players wear belts with flags that hang along their sides and opponents have to pull the flags off of the ball-carrier’s belt.

NFL FLAG team jersey:

  • Every player also receives Official NFL FLAG reversible team jersey upon registration.

Shorts:

  • Every player also receives Official No-Pocket NFL FLAG Shorts upon registration.

***It’s important to wear shorts that don’t have pockets. This allows the belt and flags to be visible at all times, avoiding unnecessary penalties. It also is a safety precaution so that fingers don’t get stuck when attempting to remove the flag.

Mouthguard.

  • This is the only protective gear that players wear. We recommend having a backup pair in your bag, just in case.

Football cleats.

  •  Only molded rubber or plastic cleats are permitted. Metal cleats are not allowed under any circumstances.

Football gloves (optional).

  • Some players prefer to use football gloves, which give extra grip to help control the ball. These aren’t required, though.
